Fashion Night Out: NYC || Paris

Fashion Night Out has become a world wide banger. New York City is literally buzzing. It is a night where every single retail shop opens their doors with great sales and new Fall clothing lines and dumps free champagne down the throats of excited fashionistas and swaggsters. Everyone crunk. Party everywhere. Great energy.

This year I DJ'd @ Lord & Taylor's flagship store in midtown Manhattan. I think Ivanna Trump was hyping up a party the floor below me, and Solange Knowles was learning how to DJ in the public eye on another floor. Regardless by 9pm I was swarmed by tipsy shoppers.

#FNO is totally worldwide now. Even though I was DJing in NYC for the night, I was approached by Marc Jacobs in Paris to provide their music for their FNO party. The mix I provided for the Parisian party.

The Wilderness Banger

Over Labor Day weekend Jonesy & I got booked to play a 2-night party at a summer camp in Port Jervis, NY, about 2 hours north of New York City. The summer camp was rented out by party promo team LivingSocial.com, and about 350 people, 21yrs+ came out to the Summer Camp to party, camp, enjoy recreational activities in the wilderness for Labor Day Weekend. Bonfire status.

Before we left the city I hit up my homie/artist Chad, and told him that we have the chance to 'Flee the hood' for a few days to get some fresh air and clear our minds. In no time we dipsetted out of Harlem and hit up the Summer Camp.

Our first party on Friday night took places on the deck of a camp mess hall literally in the middle of the woods. A giant moth landed on Chad while we were sound-checking and homie literally bugged out. Both Friday night and Saturday the parties on deck were Ragers. A few points during the party, the campers were jumping so hard that the entire deck was literally bouncing up and down. Most of the campers were on the hippy-open minded vibe, which allowed for an amazing variety of music selection that enabled s to create a deep forest-like groove.

We slept in a cabin in between our sets and then chilled w/ the campers for the day time, where we played some serious dodgeball, football, and some Olympic status BLOBBING.

Literally right after my gig in Glarus Switzerland we drove an hour back to Zurich at 6am so I could catch my flight to Chicago.

For the 3rd year in a row I was brought out to Chicago to DJ the annual Ex-Awards, which is an international awards gala that is considered to be "the Oscars of Event Marketing." I was brought in to spin the pre-and-post ceremony, and this year I also DJ'd the actual awards show spinning cuts of my choice as industry personnel won the 'Ex-Award.'

That's right, I am rocking the same outfit as my Swiss gig.

Big Shouts: Big shouts to my S-Town homie Dane who gave me shelter for the 3 nights I spent in the Chi. Shouts to my S-Town girl Kelly C. who organized the entire event.

There's a couple of corperate hunnies in there...

Lastly, shouts to my other girl DJ Avi Sic who brought me to the clubs Debonair and The Evil Olive after the awards show to witness the parties "REHAB" w/ Sammy Bananas and the dubstep/electro-core "Porn & Chicken" party. Somehow at Rehab everyone thought I was Sammy Bananas. And as for the Porn & Chicken party, I've never heard so much Skrillex played in one hour. Then I was outty and back to NYC.

Supremus Sounds has been Jonesy & my European booking agency for nearly four years. About two weeks ago the Supremus HNIC, Steve Supreme, called me up on Skype and booked me to come out and rock in Switzerland for the weekend. There was a new party out in Glarus, Switzerland (about 1 hour from Zurich) that was called "4 NEW YORK" at "The Club."

Steve Supreme is very famous and respected in Switzerland and word has gotten around the country that Steve has been making a solid name for himself and his company out in New York. So The Club hired Steve to fly me out to Switzerland to come and christen their new New York night. I flew out of NYC Thursday night and arrived into a beautiful sunny Zurich on Friday. I begged Steve to bring me to Zurich Lake becuase I knew all of the sexy Swiss hunnies would be lounging by the lake. At this point I have pretty much aced the roll of the "excited starry-eyed tourist" which works wonders as a pick-up line for foreign women, especially when you tell them that you are from New York. None the less Zurich Lake was crackin' off and I ended up jumping into the lake with 3 soaking wet Swiss girls.

Later at night Steve and I were scheduled to DJ for the opening night of this brand new open-air European lounge called "Bagatelle" located right in Longstrasse, which is the heart of downtown Zurich...

Steve was called in by the Bagtelle owners to curate the sound for the new lounge. Steve orchastrated our sets to focus on funky house, deep grooves, and warm vibes. With all of the windows open, the Bagatelle Lounge was extra smooth and eventually swelled up with Swiss groovers soaking the vibes. Steve and I both had a blast spinning this event as we were able to spin deep and rare grooves in the middle of a beautiful spring night in Switzerland.

On Saturday I had dinner at my homie DJ Irresponsible's house. DJ Irresponsible is from Serbia but after the war his family relocated to Switzerland. DJ Irresponsibility is not only a crazy bastard as his name suggests, but he is a serious basketball player, and fantastic DJ with an amazing ear and an incredible taste for worldly grooves. Irresponsible came to the United States for the first time last year when Steve brought him to New York to stay at my apartment. Irresponsible fell in love with Harlem and even challenged a squad of thugs at a game of basketball at Rucker Park. Regardless, his Serbian family cooked us some bangin' cultural dishes and showed us some rare liquors and some huge serbian machine gun before we drove out to the valley of Glarus Switzerland to DJ.

In the car ride to the club in Glarus, I fell asleep into a deep trance-like daze while listening to the advance copy of FLO Presents: Chad- Music Or Suicide (to be released). During this sleep my mind traveled to a far off place as I began to take in the consciousness of who I was, where I was, and what I was doing. I love music and I love surrendering myself to its power especially to a subconscious degree, living adventure through the medium of music. Steve woke me up when we arrived. We were in this cobblestone village surrounded by rolling hills and a bubbling river running right through the valley. The air was sweet and moist from rain. Glarus, a town of only 12,000, had only 2 main clubs. As I entered the club it was completely full with all of the party-goers /teenagers from town, it was the spot to be at on a Saturday night in this small Swiss village. The sound-system was excellent, and my homies Steve Supreme & Mad Kid murdered their DJ sets. When I got on the decks I was introduced to the crowd in Swiss-German, instantly started sweating and threw down one of the hardest sets of this year. Pictures coming soon.

We drove directly from the club to the airport. I had to jump on a 10am flight to go DJ in Chicago.

Getlive Wins NYC Redbull 3Style

My close homie, Euro Touring partner (Supremus Sounds), and Queens native, DJ Getlive absolutely bodied the Redbull 3Style DJ competition on Friday.

He was the First fo 9 DJ's to perform. Each DJ had 15 minutes to showcase their skills by mixing at least "3 genres." The DJ who could "rock the crowd" the hardest wins. Well Getlive got a mosh-pit started as he whipped us all in a frenzy to tracks such as System Of A Down, Rage Against The Machine, Rob Base, Naughty By Nature, and Nirvana.

The Redbull 3Style East Coast finals will be held on May 3rd in Washington DC.

The day after our "Home Cooked" banger, me, Jonesy, and my Harlem crew, Chad and his cousin Ronald hit the road to DJ a Spring formal for UCONN's Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity. The Frat rented out the entire Sheraton Hotel and through a banger in the banquet hall. My close Stamford homie, and Cascade Cru brethren, Nate, aka "Fratastc" (pictured below) hooked us up with the gig:

"Free Spirit Style" Insight (after the jump)

Free Spirit Style:

One of my main purposes for starting this blog was to document the life decisions and progress that I am experiencing during my life. From a young age I decided to consciously follow my dreams and let my interests lead me into new beginnings, depth, and new territory.

Understanding things more through time it became clear that I am choosing to pursue my life by allowing my heart to lead the path. As a result I started this blog to achieve two main objectives:

1) To create a timeline of my progress that reflects my experiences, documenting honest insight to my the peaks and valleys 2) to inspire and give strength to my friends, family, and others to gravitate to their life goals

Unique paths create unique decisions, and at times there is no map or directions that you can reference. This means advice becomes scarce, and intuition becomes a dominant signal. It's both thrilling and intense. I want to always let my people know that I am here, and we are in it together.

I no longer have any idea if anyone even reads this blog, but I am compelled to document how I feel and keep it honest for my own reference. If and when I find myself in the future needing to understand how I arrived at a certain position, my blog and music productions will be my trail map.

Fashion Week at Diesel NYC

Jonesy! and I have somehow kept our DJ residency at the Diesel Store on 60th St. & Lexington for nearly 2 years now. It is fascinating becuase it is actually the only proper DJ residency that we have ever had...ever. I swear that I when I was first introduced to the gig from my friend, DJ Mary Mac, she told me how much the Diesel Store paid, and I nearly laughed at the price. I swore that I would DJ there only one once. Ok, after our first DJ gig the staff at Diesel vibed so hard with us, that Jonesy! & I wanted to commit to a relationship. The Diesel staff has crazy New York swag, and furthermore, they have encouraged Jonesy and I to DJ as creatively as possible. Literally Diesel has become our weekly petri-dish of djing, where we have spent countless hours testing out new records, mashing genres, and testing new DJ styles week after week. Witnessing an entire evolution, I think we have fixed their soundsystem about 30 times by now, and have seen atleast 4 DJ mixers and 6 turntables come and go...

This past week was Fashion Week in New York and we spun everyday at Diesel throwing down major new tunes. Even before DJing there, the only jeans that I wore were Diesel. I still only wear Diesel Jeans. So shouts to all my Diesel peoples: Shouts to my homie Jordan for all of our insane psychological music chats, shouts to my sexy Boriqua, Sophia, who knows every OG DJ from her hometown in the Bronx, shouts to my nucca Alan the security guard who fervently freestyles to everything I play and then shows me his DIY Youtube freestyle uploads. Shouts to my fallen soldier Marlon who was the classic "I WANT UPBEAT HOUSE MUSIC" guy, and shouts to that one Diesel staff honey that I keep scoping every week but my shy self never made a move and now she no longer works at Diesel. Diesel, you have won the hearts of two non-committing DJ's, congratulations.

DJ FLO and I are on the run again and only one of us are ducking charges. In Aspen for the X-Games again, we decided (moreso I did) to have a more PG-13 extravaganza, choosing to try and survive Mother Nature instead of partying with a lot of drunken mother’s. I had been watching a lot of Survivorman and wanted to test my mettle against the wacky weather we’ve been having. FLO, on the other hand, was here for business — and entertained my aspirations for adventure with $#!*s and giggles...

“With the weather as messed up as it’s been lately, they should take the show down to D.C.,” I remarked while surveying our surroundings. “Yeah, maybe Obama would come through,” FLO jokes. The landscape was just as amazing as it was when we left. This time the quest focused on elevation in a different sense. For me it was about getting high off my own supply, crack jokes, and not be so anti-social. After getting settled into our cabin by the North (I’m getting better with sensing directions) — we got ready for FLO’s gig with Sneaktip at the Hunter Bar. My, oh, my… there were plenty of Bambi’s to fawn over. Who thought that white girls loved funk? We partied major to live get-down music provided by Memphis Tenn and drank cold brews with Colorado’s own DJ Dtale.

I could only handle so much smoke and partying so I got did my own hunting and explored Red Mountain… by myself. I had already re-christened Smuggler Mountain as The Smugger Mountain so it was best to just walk on the wild-side in the wilderness. “This is no Brooklyn,” I say to myself and the sounds of the night make themselves known. I had only been walking around for twenty minutes when FLO called me and said, “Yo, the after-party is at our place… Where you at?” Quicker than you could say “Charlie Sheen, coke, and porn stars,” I was on the way back to the cabin. Let’s just say that was a bad decision as I caught some blond bombshell’s bubonic plague virus and missed all the X-Games. Thanks to some Queen of Sheba long-distance loving, a boat-load of Hale & Hearty soup, and some Superman-like power naps — I recovered with hours to spare before the coup de grâce — The Sweet Life.

Full of ice cream, candy, and gorgeous girls — FLO, Jonesy, and yours truly partied like kings as we played the latest and greatest music has to offer. It was there at Snowmass Base Village Plaza where we learned two things:

*No matter where you’re at in the world — when you play Rick Ross’ “Blowin’ Money Fast” it makes anyone think they’re Big Meech.

I am opening up to share this nugget of realness as I need to let loose some thoughts and feelings:

I am focused on the future, the next 20 years with the first 10 years right in my mind. I couldn't be more excited for the future and all that it bears, I have big dreams and plan to continue to pursue them becuase I am self-aware of how to achieve during my life. Matter of fact, this blog was designed for me to reflect my entire self-determined hustle in order to help inspire others to observe how the strong-willed can pursue and overcome any circumstances, rough or remarkable. But living right now, in the present, I go through days with enormous highs followed by steep lows. Every once and a while a wave of anxiety hits me out of nowhere and I focus diligently to curb this energy toward positive output. But damn, to keep it really real, the market that I am interacting with is very, very tight and very, very dry. I.e., the heat in my Harlem apartment is off for this winter, and bananas, rice, and carrots have dominated my diet. I completely support myself off of my music hustle, and in addition to this I have a team of homies who I break bread with as well, and we are walking a tight rope with a lot right now in order to keep it moving. Sometimes a wave of doubt hits me in the middle of the day where I begin to think "what the f*ck am I doing? Where am I going? How am I going to do this? How am I going to get this money without sacrificing my talents? None the less I remain determined to blast away these feelings of doubt and carry onward. My good man Steve Supreme from Switzerland gave me a parcel of knowledge the last time he was staying with me in Harlem. He said, "FLO, NEVER DOUBT YOURSELF. NEVER DOUBT YOURSELF." Those words, yet so simple, came into my ears so clear and pure. And even right now as I write this entry somewhat low, I am filled with strength after I think of Supreme's simple phrase....

I've been pursing my goals with music since I was 14 years old. Music has always been a savior for me, and I am not afraid to write this entry, thus exposing my vulnerability because I know that there are many great inspired people out there who can and need to relate to my feelings. Our generation is a very special one. We are the first generation where the majority have been granted high levels of academic education, yet upon our times of graduation we have entered one of America's most challenging economic times. We, the educated, have been forced into humble times and as we carry on into the future our generation will be one of the most self-sufficient, creative, and influential of all times.

I know that no one in the world can break me, I control all of me. Therefore I hope that this release of truth, these words that I have written will reach out to those who seek truth, those who travel the high road, the road less traveled, and give them confidence to know that despite all of the doubt, the financially tight times, and the waves of feeling lost in this life, you need to continue to put your bravery in the forefront and continue to share your gifts of inspiration to the world without undervaluing your energy. You need to value patience. I am able to smile through all of this knowing that in the near future I will be able to look at this post and know that I have overcame difficult times, and with this strength of experience, I shall be able to continue to pursue life with a lick of ferocity and bravery that shall carry me to even higher levels of actualization. The hungry don't stay hungry for long.

Rock & Soul is perhaps the most famous record shop in New York. I have been shopping for records there since I was 14. Throughout the course of time there were always legends shopping in that store. It is truly a hub of hip-hop history. Yesterday Rock & Soul had their annual Holiday DJ Battle and I was invited to come thru. I ended up spending about $150 on vinyl (money that I really couldn't afford) and started kickin it w/ my homie Grandmaster Caz and Tony Tone of the legendary Cold Crush Brothers.

The Story of TOKYO-FLO

December 6th- December 14th 2010

Tokyo, Japan

[listen to this while reading post]

About two weeks ago one of my great friends from my Galactic-Hustling Cru, JAQ, called me up and said this:

JAQ: "Yo B, my boy DJ Mateo is out in Tokyo for the whole month of December. He's got the city on lock and is well connected with the models n' bottles party scene. We gotta go out there and make some moves, it's a whole new world of hustling in Tokyo, we can't miss this opportunity, les go!"

I looked at my business calender and was like,
FLO: Damn JAQ, you want to leave in 12 days? That's right in the middle of the holiday season in New York? It's crucial grinding time here, plus money is tight.

JAQ: Fuck New York B, it's cold and its the same old here. Don't you want to get away from this Nicki Minaj-mania? We need to make this happen, plus the ¥en is mighty powerful, we need to make the connections to get that Japanese paper. Plus, this is what life is all about, seeing new worlds. Let's go and hustle this city.

FLO: Nuff said, its freezing here in New York and we only have one life to live, lets do it. Book the flight.

And that was it. For the next week I was sitting there thinking to myself like "Damn, I have so little money, I am leaving New York right in the midst of the holidays, and I am flying to a whole new world with no contacts? This is going to be an interesting situation. For the next 12 days I barely told anyone about my Tokyo plans. I was still trying to believe that this was real. I travel often, but this was truly on some go-getter type level. For the next 12 days I teetered between being anxious, nervous, adrenaline charged, and excited. My brain was literally going a mile-a-minute with thoughts, knowing that I would soon be diving into a new risk and opportunity, a whole new world.

So the day comes for us to fly out, we hop onto our 15hr flight, and JAQ and I look at each other and say "I can't believe this is actually happening, fuck it, I love my life."

As we land in Tokyo and step off the plane, the bright lights of Japanese writing on billboards and vending machine strike our vision as our eyes began to bulge soaking in the new world sites. In the airport JAQ picks up his phone and says, "Yo B, we gotta pick up these other two guys who will be traveling with us." In the beauty of perfect timing these two guys, about our age, walk off the plane from Miami,and we all give each other dap as we introduce each other. Our new travel friends were Chris and Andrew, 2 freshly dapper homies who also came to Tokyo on the same tip as us- they were friends of DJ Mateo who decided to take a karpe-diem approach to life and travel to Tokyo to explore a whole new world. Within minutes JAQ, Andrew, Chris, and myself made about 10 connections in terms of people we knew from our hustles. They were both heavily involved in music and nightlife out in Miami. Then within 5 minutes DJ Mateo walks into the airport, swagged and chilled out in his beanie hat and torn jeans, and greets us, "Konichiwa."

In the taxi ride to Tokyo I start to learn more about everyone. This is the profile on our Tokyo Cru:

DJ Mateo :

is the definition of a world class DJ who has seen a lot and has one of the most killer a-list world-wide black books. Mateo is in his young 30's, and is a Brooklyn native DJ who came up carrying crates of vinyl for the legendary DJ Clark Kent. Mateo is also the official tour DJ for U2 360 Tour, and Fun Lovin Criminals. Mateo was the resident DJ at infamous NYC spots like Limelight, Tunnell, Bungalow 8, Sound Factory, Crobar (just to name a few). He spins for the Grammy's in LA, Cannes Film Festival in the spring, Vanity Fair Oscar party yearly, and has a laundry list of A-list events that stem all the way back to the early 1990's. Put it like this, if you own a mega-yacht, Mateo has probably DJ'd a party you attended. The homie nearly blew my mind when he told me that he DJ'd on a submarine....damn. Mateo currently lives in Miami where he is the resident DJ for the Delano and Shoreclub, but he was spending 2 months DJing out in Asia to spread is music . It was his 6th time DJing in Tokyo. On top of all this baller talk, the homie Mateo is one of the realest and down to earth DJ's that I've ever met. Basically, I was in this Tokyo taxi like "damn son, this is gonna be nuts."

Andrew Dade:

We call him "Dade." Dade rolled into the airport with some slick Burton luggage, a black Louis V goosedown jacket with a camouflage liner, and a matching Louis V passport case. Long story short, Dade has the eye for fashion and quality. Dade lives in Miami and knows Mateo from his heavy involvement in the Miami club scene. Dade knows pretty much any DJ in Miami who is worth knowing, and broke down all these connections to us in the taxi. The funniest thing is that both Dade and his homie Chris use the same slang as me and Jaq. Within an hour of conversation these guys are dropping terms like "madd crazy" "yo, don't do that, that shit is suspect" "this guy is a G" "Yo, this taxi costs 4 stacks" "that's that ill fatty gear" "Yo this is baller...yo that is gangster." Haha, we all spoke the same slang. It was Dade's first time in Japan. Dade, fresh and hilarious. He became addicted to O Toro (grade A fatty tuna sushi) during our trip.

Chris Delafester:

The freshest Cuban-Italian I've ever met. Chris was in awe the entire time he was in Tokyo (like myself). His eyes were huge taking everything in, and he was high on life the entire week. Chris is mad cool, and the dude knows everyone from Miami. He knows such baller people that I don't even think I should talk about his rock solid rolodex on my blog. Let's just say that if you are a baller in Miami, a major artist, or DJ who has touched base in Miami, Chris has probably been in touch with you. The fact is that Chris was mega-humble about all of that, and simply put good-people are in touch with good-people. Chris rocked this Cuban cigar-roller hat then entire trip.

JAQ:

Yo. JAQ is one of my great friends. We met back in 2005 when I started interning at Interscope/Geffen, where he was also an intern. This Dominican hustler seriously out-hustles anyone I know. His story is too great for me too write, he would rather tell you himself and keep it real. His diamond ambition for art, music, and life has caused him to meet some of the most amazing people in the world in some of the most amazing places. Greatest of all, he has done it all with literally no money. He dub's himself a 'broke rockstar'. JAQ's connects are RETTTTARDDDDED^2. Not only is he someone whom you should NEVER sleep on if you are curious about the world of music, but he is one of the most street dudes I know. He is one of my great friends and I have an everlasting respect for this gem. You should follow his journey on his blog and his twitter. Yo JAQ if you are reading this, I am laughing my ass off thinking about when I saw you catapult yourself off the bed when we had to wake up for our last day in Tokyo- You are fucking crazy son.

We were a pack of 5 world hustler, all looking to discover life and continue our missions.

Now that I've eliminated all of my potential blog readers with my indulgence to details, I will break down a few pieces of my Tokyo Adventure.

To be completely honest, the first few days of traveling I needed to let me mind relax, as it was racing from all my hustling in New York City...it's not easy doing this DJ thing solo, I am on my Robert Frost tip, 'The Road Not Taken,' paving my own path, and trying to soak in every moment of my progress. However, this can make a good man crazy at times. So my mind began to decompress as it also began to expand as the entire world around me was bright, foreign, and stylish.

The first night we went out in Tokyo Mateo brought us to a party named "Redzone," a famous weekly party hosted by 2 of Japan's top DJ's, DJ Kango & DJ Koya. Coincidentally DJ Rocktakon from New York was spinning a guest set, and the name of the club was called "Harlem." I was baffled, Harlem? God Damn, that's where I just came from, is this a message? None the less, I wore all of my Harlem gear to the club and represented my current town like a mofo. The club was completely filled with Japanese hip-hoppers. A bunch of people came up to me took photos with me wearing my Harlem shirt, they were excited and thrilled that I actually lived in Harlem.

DJ Observation: In the Japanese club scene all of the Japanese people face the DJ while they dance. It is a respect thing. this is crazy because in NYC we dance facing the girls booty, we don't give a frruck about the DJ's in NYC.

The next day we went around Tokyo's electronic district where we were introduced to some futuristic new technology. We saw wireless internet cards that project 5G WiFi, cell phones with seamlessly streaming cable tv, and even a vibrating dildo that hooks into your ipod and vibrates to the beat of the music.

Throughout the week Mateo took us club hopping, we went to a model club called LEX one night where we met a bunch of European models and a few Japanese girls (mostly under the age of 17yrs). Then he took us over to his residency club called Feria, which was another 'model's-n-bottles' club spot, where he spun alongside Japan's respected DJ Yoshi. It was designed like Lotus in New York, and was again, packed with European models and clusters of Japanese girls. Mateo spun 3 nights at Feria, Three drunken nights. Alongside The vibe was very club-like, big bangers mixed with some current hip-hop tunes and electro-rippers. Once and a while and a while I was able to hop on the decks and hold down the spot. We got smashed here each night. One of the nights, all of the models dressed up in white Japanese nurse outfits....Mmm.

One thing about Tokyo that stunned all of us was the fact that the urban fashion was impeccable. I mean literally, 90% of the population had undeniable swagger. The women with sexy short skirts, leggings, amazingly cut jackets and glasses. All of the men had perfectly cut jeans and fly coats and hats. On top of this there was no posh-snobbishness to their fashion sense. It was completely humble in it's whole. Also about 20% of the people wear surgical masks in Tokyo to protect themselves from an advertised Japanese flu-epidemic that is prevalent.

JAQ is also very involved in the fashion world. JAQ kept hollering at the Japanese girls, asking them if he could take photo's of them in the streets. JAQ also had a good friend in Tokyo, her name was Myu. She is a good skateboarder but a horrible photographer, ,and she ended up being our key tour guide throughout the trip. During our time in Tokyo JAQ had scheduled a meeting with someone by the name of Shin. Shin was a famous Japanese skateboarder who was launching a new clothing line called Push Connection. Shin was pretty much the most swaggered out Japense person we met. He invited us to an underground electro party in Shibyua (most comparable to the area of the East Village in NYC). JAQ and I adventured over there one night and were blown away by the fucking awesome sound system and killer underground Japanese music scene. The DJ was blasting nu-wave electro, some Japanese edits, and a few well known bangers like "Duck Sauce" and "Sinichi Osawa." We were very excited to have discovered this underground scene, we were the only non-Japanese people at the show.

Finally the food was the truth in Japan. The rumors are true, everything is fish, rice, soy, and green tea. We discovered some whole in the wall places along our trip and even enjoyed the finest sushi from the famous Tsukiji Fish Market. We had to get to the market at 5am in order to taste this sushi.

I don't feel like writing anymore about how amazing Tokyo was, and anyone who read this entire blog post...you are hardcore and I love y'all for reading. If there is anything to draw from this post, please, just live your life and take risks, fuck it, you will be fine, there is a very special grace of faith that will protect the brave and committed. We got it in out in Tokyo and JAQ and I have plans to return shortly to continue our worldly musical journey and conquest of living our dreams to the fullest extent possible.

For NYC's Fashion Nigh Out I was DJing a party for French Connection down in SoHo. Admist all the fashionista diva chaos that was buzzing in the air, the PR girl from French Connection came up to me and told me that the Kendra Show was going to make an appearence in the store to shoot some footage. I don't even own a TV at my apartment so I didn't even know who Kendra was, but I was ready to hustle to get on the show. Never the less Kendra and her camera crew showed up and the whole store started buzzing in a star-struck mobile camera-phone Twitter frenzy. I literally didn't know which person was Kendra, all I knew was that all of a sudden no one in the store was actually listening to my music anymore, the vibe had completely shifted to people taking iPhone photos of Kendra. So in the mean time I started blasting some ghetto ass jamz, like some real hood shit (aka Vado & Cam'ron and old LOX mixtape tracks) while I continuously plugged my "FLO, FLo, Flo, flo..." DJ drop. At the end of Kendra's shopping romp she came up to me armed with her camera crew and entourage of Twitter followers and asked if I could teach her how to DJ. So I did the classic sell-out move and taught her how to baby scratch...but she pretty much couldn't learn anything I taught her, it went in one ear and poof...She was a sweetheart though, and a few months later my friends called me up like "OMG OMG FLO I JUST SAW YOU ON THE KENDRA SHOW." It turns out the my sexy ass made a cameo on film, and I enjoyed like 15 seconds of fame...that night I was poked by like 4 girls on Facebook. Now I'm like "Yeah girl, I don't know if you watch the Kendra show, but I'm kinda like a big deal..."

My big homie DJ Fatfingaz hit me up and asked if I'd like to spin on GOOM Radio along with my Swiss partner in crime, DJ Steve Supreme. Of course we said yes, and woke up madddd early the next morning, jumped on the PATH train to Jersey, and walked into the radio station. We were cordially greeted by the sarcasm of GOOM radio personality Will2B. Five minutes later Will2B announces that none other than Pete Rock is coming to the show to spin a guest DJ set! Within moments in walks a sleepy-eyed Pete Rock. Pete had just come from a studio session with John Legend, and talked about his newly produced tracks for Kanye's latest project and Jay-Z's upcoming project. He jumped on the decks and threw down some of his newest sounds. Yes, the entire time all of us were starstruck.

FLO + Co. @ BEATMINERZ Radio

I was blessed with two opportunities to rock out @ BEATMINERZ RADIO, thanks to my close homie DJ Getlive. Both times I was hosting some of my foreign DJ homies, DJ Lenzageddon from Germany and DJ Steve Supreme from Switzerland. This was a big opportunity for all of us.

And it goes a little something like this:

DJ Getlive called me up and was like "Ayo, Y'all can rock w/ me over at Beatminerz, come thru to Bushwick to DJ Evil Dee's Crib." (DJ Evil Dee is 1/2 of the Beatminerz, and to make a long story short, he is a major pillar of Hip Hop culture)

Instantly my foreign DJ homies were psyched. We trekked out deep into Bushwick and Getlive scoops us up in his whip. He leads us to this little gate and knocks on the door. A minute later we hear Evil Dee's smokey voice say, "Sssup y'all, y'all chillen?" He pops out the door with his thick dreadlock braids and gives us all soul-dap as we enter with mad respect. Inside his house all we can see are records and boxes of Nike shoes...that's it! We enter the kitchen and it is literally connected to his DJ studio, where basically his house has somehow symbiotically combined into a DJ/Home-living situation. Evil Dee had lived here his whole life and literally ancient old DJ equipment was piled everywhere like a time-line of music history right infront of our face. Seriously, his house literally smells like dusty vinyls. His crib smells like hip-hop!

The whole time we hang out I am stoked, and Evil Dee starts talking a little about how he produced records with Premier, and how he is lining up his next tour, and how he EQ's his Serato in the way that proper vinyl should be EQ'd, and he gossiped about the production credits on the new Jay-Z records, and on-and-on we talked about music and hip-hop. Evil started telling me that he has 400 crates of vinyl in his basement, and I said "prove it," so he did. He took me into his basement where there was an ocean of records, a history of music lay right in front of me. I was in aw, and I felt honored, and then I understood many things about us DJ's having a societal importance to archive music to maintain our roots as history moves onward. It was a beautiful thing. Evil Dee didn't allow us to take photo's of his basement, and he told us that he doesn't show many people his collection. We felt honored, and for me to see something like this was like the equivolent of me laying my eyes on a very rare and special discovery of nature. We were like, "YOOOOO EVIL, THANK YOU, RESPECT," and he responded in his classic catch phrase "Yo, It's all flava, its alllll flava."

This is one of the craziest time in New York City. There are BILLIONS of indie artists running around the streets of New York hustling their music. Everyone has a Sound Cloud account, everyone has a demo, a ringtone, a band, a group, a Bandcamp account... It's incredible to me, it's gotta be like the 1980's (even though I was born in '86)

This year we are taking Halloween to a gritty underground party that is being held in a private room in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Damn, it is going to be a mess. There are about 5 nu-wave artists performing before my set. I will also be performing with the artist "JMI" (soundcloud).

Cipha Sounds Gives Me the Co-Sign @ New Era

I DJ'd the Cipha Sounds "Don't Get Gassed" Fitted Hat release party yesterday at the Flagship New Era store in New York. I was so excited becuase Cipha Sounds is a Hot 97 DJ that I've listened to since I was a young teenager.

So check this: I am spinning at the party and getting into my DJ zone and soon enough this tall guy comes up to me and gives me this greeeeezy grimace

, blatantly sizing me up. I was scratching to the instrumental of N.O.R.E.- "Nothin" and then this guy walks up to me and goes, "So, what, are you like some hot shot DJ or sumthin? You think you nice or sumthin? Huh?" I responded calmly, "You know, I'm just warming up trying to get in my zone but, yeah, I know I'm nice..." And then he says, "Alright young'n, let me scratch for a minute."

So I let this guy jump on my decks and cut it up for a minute. He gets off and goes, "Damn, my hands are stiff, I used to cut much better." So I say, "Yo, it's all cool man let's keep scrathing, by the way, what's your name?"

He looks at me dead-assed cockeyed and goes, "I'M CYPHA! I THOUGHT YOU KNEW?!"

I responded, "Holy Shit, umm, whattup?"

Later that night we became homies. Much respect to Cipha, he is the f* man, and it was an honor to spin his party.

The Sri Lanka DJ Academy

There is a classic pen-pal story behind my evolving Sri Lanka connection...

In early 2008 I was reading an amazing story on Diplo's Mad Decent blog about a Sri Lankan girl from the Mad Decent family who went back to Sri Lanka for a few months on a project to document the current state of war in Sri Lanka. While she was there she was connected to a up an coming music school known as the Sri Lanka DJ Academy. It was a young school that was produced by a very enlightened and energetic guy by the name of Tareeq Musafer who was once a student of the legendary DJ Q-Bert. After reading the Mad Decent blog I was completely energized and excited to hear that there was such a school growing all the way out in Columbo, Sri Lanka. I have been a DJ teacher/instructor myself for about 5 years at the Scratch DJ Academy NYC I became quickly inspired to connect these parallels. With Sri Lanka my adventurous imagination hit me and I decided that I needed to one day get to this school in Sri Lanka and help teach some programs and play my music.

So I took hunted down Tareeq's email, and soon enough we became pen-pals, writing back and forth to each other exchanging our ideas and our mission's. It was mind-opening to hear what Tareeq had to say about Columbo. He had been building this program out of nothing but love. He informed me that in the entire country of Sri Lanka there were only 50 turnables and his Academy had half of them. He informed me of all the government corruption that constantly interfered with his plans, and he explained to me the current state of terrorism in Sri Lanka and how it was affecting the state. I became somewhat obsessed with the idea of getting out to Sri Lanka ito DJ. My grandfather even became really nervous and said to me, "Brian, I know that you love to travel but I think that Sri Lanka may be a bit too much."

It's now the end of 2010 and I haven't yet made it to Sri Lanka, but my mixtapes have. I smile when I see Tareeq's updates on Facebook about his evolving DJ movement in Colombo. I really think that 2011 will be my year to visit and DJ. Become a fan of the Sri Lanka DJ Academy on Facebook.

Jonesy and I were booked to spin a pimped out party for Circa Diamonds last night which took place at the brand new Lincoln Restaurant in the heart of Lincoln Center for NYC's Fashion week. Not to talk my djing up but when I'm on my New York Sh*t everything is a go, and this $20million restaurant that was opened by Jonathan Benno who also runs Per Se restaurant which is world famous. The building is all glass and even has a lawn on it's roof for good feng shui. None the less, the party was poppin and Jonesy and I snuck a doggy bag of pastries and sandwiches in between sets.

NYC Recession: The recession is still no joke in present day New York City. I have been witnessing it first-hand and fighting through it as a DJ. I am 24yrs old, and graduated from Fordham University's College Of Business in Spring 2008, literally months before we were slammed by the banking/insurance disaster. 4 years of expensive education and both my classmates and friends were instantly ROCKED into a recession. Literally years of educational values and business practices that we were taught became instantly hypocritical and were thrown out the window. There is a mass of young and brilliant educated youth who have absorbed the wrath of these times... and somehow I know that in the long run we will become perhaps the strongest generation of modern humanity.

The Unemployment Line is a mixtape designed as a reflection of our current musical time. Produced in New York City, my great friend and accomplished music journalist Kevin Clark (Aka Clark Kent) of Don't Lose Your Day Job takes the listener on a journey into the streets of urban music. This street tape captures the hard hustle of new artists with it's "penny for my thoughts" attitude that New York music is screaming at this time. Lastly, Kev had approached me to host this mixtape, (and I was too busy collecting my pennies for my own thoughts), however he mastered this mixtape excellently. Backstory: I was wandering around my neighborhood in Spanish Harlem a couple of weeks ago to grab a sandwich at the bodega. I turned the corner on 105th St. and 3rd Ave and all of a sudden something caught my eye. I passed a window and all this FRESH clothing was staring right back at me....
...I did a double take. Wedged in between a Spanish laundry mat and a vacant car lot stood this clothing store with no visible logo's and some wild wild Harlem gear. As I walk in- absolutely perplexed to see this in my neighborghood- it turns out this this is a gear heads dream! It is a famous secret gear boutique called Goliath that has been on the block for nearly 6 years! They rep East Harlem HARDBODY and told me that guys such as Jim Jones, Kid Cudi, and more come uptown to buy exclusive gear here.

None the less, I instantly started politican with the guys in the store, and next thing you know, they featured my Hustle & FLO Radio podcast on this weeks Music Monday's.

A-List Hamptons Hustling

Damn right, I'm featured in July's "Who's Who" section of Hamptons Magazine.

FLO & Jonesy- Hamptons House Party (live dj set)

For those that aren't familiar with the Hamptons: basically, a giant chunk of New Yorkers dipset out of NYC every weekend and make the 3 hour drive up the spine of Long Island to the small Hampton villages along the Atlantic Coast to escape the immense NYC humidity. The majority of this crowd are the rich, social, and native New Yorkers who are very loyal to their summer Hamptons lifestyle. I'm talking about a place where every house is laced with white-picket fences, every car in the streets are maybachs or mercedez, convertible Lamborghinis are parked with the drop-top down, a place where everyone is shopping at Citarella before they go to a polo match and drink champagne quality that is X > Veuve Clicquot, and a place that is far enough from New York where people can finally get f*cked up with out feeling the never-ending pressures of New York City. Basically "A-List" people come to the Hamptons and get very loose and drunk, and sh*t goes down...

Jonesy and I get a lot of Hamptons DJ work, and this past weekend we were booked to do a couple events. It was one of the most humid days of the summer, straight up dripping sweat. Our first gig was a day-time fashion gig @ the Elie Tahari store in East Hampton. The 2nd gig was a private party that took place in Southampton. Jonesy and I got booked to play this event with literally no information other than the address and the time we had to arrive.

As we roll up to the address, a giant white gate slides open, and we embark upon a classic Hamptons mansion, complete with a stone swimming pool, a grass tennis court, and about 3 acres of plush gardens. It turns out we were DJing a party for a guy who runs some sort of baller-ass private equity firm in NYC (classic Hamptons situation), and he was throwing a big outdoor party for himself. Long story short, about 200 people came out to guzzle the endless bottles of Patron, New Zealand wine, Red Stripe brews, and champagne that I can't pronounce despite my well traveled vernacular skills. As the party cooked up under the full moon, the dancefloor finally began to fill up with blond-bombshell cougar hunny-dips after hours of socializing by the bar.

"Hey, I think John Legend likes your music." Jonesy and I look up, and whatta you know, dripping in all white linen, John Legend is freaking on the dancefloor

In the middle of our peak hour DJ set this guy comes up to us and goes, "Hey, I think John Legend likes your music." Jonesy and I look up, and whatta you know, dripping in all white linen, John Legend is freaking on the dancefloor getting his James Brown-meets-Diddy-meets-Al Green on with some sexy ass girl. Jonesy turns to me and goes, "Damn I see this dude EVEYWHERE!" Funny enough, earlier in the night Jonesy was telling me how he has seen John Legend in Soho 3 times while he has DJ'd. I mixed in a remix to the song Consequence ft. John Legend/Kanye - Whatever You Want & John Legend- Greenlight while homie was getting his swurve on w/ his Hamptons hunny.

None the less, I wanted to share a classic A-List, who's who, Hampton experience on my blog. I don't know who actually reads this thing anymore, and basically I'm writing to remind myself of what is happening in my life as things fly by.

PS, for any DJ's out there, peep the live set from this Hamptons House Party. People in the Hamptons have a unique groove and need to be watched very closely on the dancefloor while DJing, dance classics are key.

Swiss Summer Pt. 3- DJ @ Frauenfeld Openair

Here we go again. To cap off our DJ trip we were on our way to camp out in Frauenfeld, Switzerland for 4 nights of pure Swiss rawkus. It was our 2nd year DJing @ Frauenfeld, and in addition to this it was me Jonesy's 2nd year as the headlining acts for the Mash-Up Party tent.

Quick background on Frauenfeld, it is one of the largest outdoor festivals in all of Europe. It is considered the largest hip-hop festival in Europe, and this year alone 148,000 people were in attendance for 4 days of chaos.

If you have ever attended an overnight festival, it is true that special things happen during these times. There is a lot of emotion and energy let loose into the Universe. The weather was hot to death and we were up partying all night and partying all day. I will let the photo's and video's tell the story on this one:
